Respawn has published a two-season roadmap for Apex Legends Ranked that splits cleanly into near-term mechanical changes and a structural rebuild. Season 31, which starts in November, adds Legend Banning to high-tier lobbies and reworks entry costs for uneven matches. Season 32, due in early 2027, rebuilds the rank ladder around two separate leagues, adds three new ranks, and flattens the scoring system. Respawn frames the whole effort around four goals — keeping Ranked competitive, rewarding everyone, offering more ways to show accomplishment, and protecting fairness — but the practical upshot is that how you earn RP, and how much risk a given lobby carries, is about to change.
Season 31 prices a wide-skill lobby’s risk into your entry cost
The most immediate change is aimed at uneven lobbies. In low-population windows the matchmaker already widens the skill spread to keep queue times reasonable, which can drop a Bronze squad into a Gold lobby or pull a Diamond squad down into one. Respawn is introducing a Lobby Tier — the median of every squad in the match — and adjusting entry costs around it. A squad two or more tiers below the Lobby Tier enters as a Challenger and pays a reduced entry cost, because its chances of winning are lower. A squad two or more tiers above enters as a Goliath and pays an increased cost, because it is heavily favored. The adjustment is applied to the entry cost up front, so you can see exactly what you need to do to break even before the drop.
Diamond and above gets a Legend Banning phase
Legend Banning also arrives in Season 31, enabled alongside Drop Zone deployment so any match containing Diamond or higher players uses it. Each player in a Diamond+ lobby picks one Legend to nominate before selection, and every nominated Legend shows a ban chance proportional to its share of the votes. The system then bans Legends at random using those percentages, and banned picks are off the table for that match. Respawn deliberately avoided a deterministic most-voted ban, arguing that always banning the top pick would simply create a new ban meta. The result is that a squad relying on one dominant support or controller cannot guarantee access to that Legend in every high-tier game.
Ranked access loosens and demotion risk becomes visible
Getting into Ranked also gets easier. Respawn is removing the Road to Ranked challenge set and moving access back to Account Level 20, after concluding the challenges were not as effective as hoped and took too much time and effort for some players. The company acknowledges the obvious worry — easier access could mean more cheaters — and points to its anti-cheat team’s ongoing work rather than a new Ranked-specific gate. Separately, Demotion Protection, which already existed but was effectively hidden, is being made visible. When a single match could demote you — including a Goliath match with a heightened entry cost — you get three Demotion Shields. One shield is consumed each time a loss would drop you a tier, and you are only demoted after all three are gone.
Season 32 rebuilds the ladder with three new ranks
The structural overhaul lands in early 2027. Rookie is replaced by Iron, a standard rank without Rookie’s special rules. Emerald slots in between Platinum and Diamond with four divisions, a new badge, and Aura representation, and is positioned as the threshold between the two leagues. Above Masters, a new Grandmaster rank sits at the very top, and the Predator badge becomes a reward for the top 750 Grandmaster players at season’s end rather than a tier of its own.
Scoring is flattened and made team-based
Scoring gets simpler and more collective. The current kill-scaling multiplier tied to final placement is removed, so each kill and each placement is worth a set amount of RP with no multiplier — a change Respawn says should curb aggressive hot drops followed by holding kills through rotations. Kills also become team kills: you receive full kill RP for every kill your squad gets regardless of your individual contribution, and assists and participations are removed. Entry costs increase by division instead of by tier, which should replace the hard wall players hit at tier boundaries like Diamond with a steadier climb.
Two leagues will reward different playstyles
The ladder is also being split. Open League contains the lower ranks, starts every match in the Dropship, and weighs kills slightly higher than placement. Pro-Am League contains Diamond, Masters, and Grandmaster — Masters gains four divisions — and is where Drop Zone deployment and Legend Banning live. Pro-Am weighs placement higher than kills, matching the scoring shape of ALGS and rewarding the end-game pressure high-level players expect.
What is still unannounced
Season 32’s reward changes are confirmed in direction only: new Seasonal Auras, new ways to use Auras, a revisit of Ranked Dive Trails, Epic and Legendary Apex Packs, and rewards on promotion so you do not wait until season’s end. Respawn says it is intentionally light on specifics and will share details and visuals closer to launch. Weekly Ladders are also going away in Season 32, with a replacement still being reimagined for next year.
For now, the takeaway is that Season 31 changes how much risk and reward a lobby carries before you even land, while Season 32 changes the ladder you are climbing and how you score on it. Respawn says more is coming beyond Season 32, so treat the roadmap as the outline rather than the full picture.
