Respawn has started an Apex Legends matchmaking test that allows longer maximum queue times for Platinum and higher-ranked players. The trial covers every platform and region, according to an October 9 notice on the game’s official Steam channel.
The extra wait is not a fixed delay. Respawn says the maximum extension scales with rank, with Masters players potentially waiting about 30 seconds longer. The studio did not publish figures for Platinum, Diamond or Predator, so the exact ceiling for those tiers remains unspecified.
Why Respawn is extending the search window
The test gives the matchmaker more time to seek a narrow skill band before it broadens the pool. Respawn’s stated goals are tighter high-skill matches and less spillover from top ranks into mid-rank lobbies.
That distinction matters for players evaluating the change. A higher maximum does not mean every Plat+ queue will take 30 additional seconds. It gives the system more room to keep searching when a close match is not immediately available. Actual wait times will still depend on rank, region, platform population and the players online at that moment.
The trial has a conditional end point
Respawn plans to run the test until the current season ends or until it has gathered enough data. The announcement does not define the amount of data required, promise that the settings will become permanent or provide an early results date.
The studio is also asking players to report whether their matches feel more tightly grouped. That feedback can describe the experience, but the official notice does not yet provide outcome data such as queue-time averages, rank distributions or changes in match quality.
What the test does not change
The announcement describes a matchmaking adjustment rather than a ranked scoring, tier or gameplay balance update. It does not say that Platinum players will stop meeting higher ranks entirely. Its narrower aim is to reduce skill-band expansion by letting the search remain selective for longer.
For Plat+ players, the practical signal is straightforward: some searches may last longer while Respawn measures whether patience produces closer lobbies. Any judgment about success should wait for the studio’s results, since the current post explains the test design but not its performance.
