Project Aces is changing how Ace Combat presents its story. In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the developer has moved away from the series’ detached, cutscene-driven framing and toward a first-person structure that keeps the player inside the cockpit, the briefing room, and the war itself.
The setup centers on the Federation of Central Usea, whose battered navy is fighting off the invading Sotoans. The player controls a silent fighter pilot who opens the story adrift in a life raft before being picked up by the Endurance, one of the FCU’s last aircraft carriers. From there the pilot is assigned as navigator to Jan “Rex” Cope, a pilot better known as the Wings of Theve.
Cope’s reputation is part of the FCU’s wartime propaganda, and his real orders are to run from every fight. When the two are shot down and Cope is killed, the protagonist inherits the Wings of Theve callsign and quietly replaces him. The callsign is too valuable a symbol for the struggling FCU to lose, so the switch is kept secret while the player grows into the role.
The presentation reinforces that intimacy. Most cutscenes are shot in first person, placing the player on the deck and in rooms with other characters, and DualSense haptics add weight to the moment-to-moment feel. Small interactions run throughout: yes-or-no answers on the D-pad, looking around with the right stick, and responding to prompts with Triangle or Square all shape how the rest of Joker Flight reads the protagonist.
Some of these choices are deliberately modest. In one early mission the squadron encounters an allied flight that is also a famous rock band, and letting squadmate Coster break formation to help them is the sort of low-key moment the game uses to build rapport. The radio works the same way: during an ambush, ground troops beg the Wings of Theve for help, and answering can bring those same characters back later. The overall story does not branch on these decisions, but they make the player’s part in the war feel consequential.
Project Aces and Bandai Namco laid out the approach in a September 25, 2026 post on the PlayStation Blog. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launches October 2 on PlayStation 5.
