Arrowhead Game Studios has published a retrospective on Helldivers 2’s Devoid of Liberty update, with creative director Mikael Eriksson assessing what the launch got right and what still needs work.
Writing in a Steam announcement on September 25, 2026, Eriksson frames the update as a “vertical slice” of the game the studio wants Helldivers 2 to be every week, not in the volume of new content but in how consistently its fiction holds together.
Building the Illuminate’s Void
The update’s central threat was the Void, and Eriksson says its presence “transcended the game.” It appeared in mission descriptions, on the battlefield, in war reporting, and in community creations, keeping the threat visible far beyond the Super Destroyer windows and the Galactic War map.
After exploring the Terminid Hive Worlds and Automaton Cyborg Factories, the team turned to the Illuminate, a faction built around mystery and technology players cannot fully understand. The Void was designed as an oppressive, alien environment that resents the player’s presence, using unsettling audio design and distorted Void flora to keep Helldivers on edge. The update also added new enemy variants in the form of twisted, razor-limbed human experiments and expanded the Illuminate Fleet system, grouping Illuminate enemies into distinct Fleets.
SEAF squadmates and the Warhammer crossover
Eriksson names SEAF squadmates as the feature he is most excited about: AI companions that follow commands and react to the fight, giving solo players and understaffed squads a lifeline without breaking the four-Helldiver experience.
The update’s Warhammer 40,000 “Castellan’s Creed” Warbond crossover brought in new players without diluting the game’s tone, and Eriksson says the studio chooses its partners with care.
Stability “too patchy” and what changes next
Eriksson is candid about the launch, calling stability “too patchy.” The update shipped with crashes on fullscreen terminal interaction and problems for players using ultra-wide monitors, which required two follow-up patches.
The most common feedback asked for more time in the Void and for community choices to shape campaign endings more clearly. The studio is now reworking campaign structure, including how many phases a Campaign runs, how long content stays live, and how much room Game Masters have to react. Stability remains the priority between updates. Helldivers 2 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
