Xbox’s October Indie Selects Span Horror, Fighters and Cozy Puzzles

Mortal Shell II combat scene from Xbox Wire’s October 2026 Indie Selects

Xbox has named six games as its Indie Selects for October 2026. The list is a curated store collection rather than a ranking, and it covers a wide range of play styles: demanding action, survival horror, tag-team fighting, tactical role-playing, diorama puzzles and open-ended island exploration.

The collection appears in the Indie Select Hub on the Xbox Store and Xbox.com. Xbox says that hub receives a new curated collection and four rotating themed spotlights every Wednesday. The six monthly selections are presented without a first-place pick.

Two darker games lead the action side

Mortal Shell II is the most combat-focused selection. Xbox describes a faster sequel without the first game’s traditional stamina gauge. Players can combine melee weapons, sidearms, abilities and executions while exploring a connected world containing optional areas, dungeons and equipment upgrades.

The Sinking City 2 takes the list toward survival horror. Set in a flooded version of 1929 Arkham, it follows Calvin Rafferty as he searches for a way to wake his fiancée after a failed ritual. Travel by boat links districts, while scarce resources, investigation and enemies that can reanimate corpses shape the pressure around combat.

Fighting and tactics fill the middle

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a 2D tag fighter built around characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Its teams combine elemental attacks, assists and character-specific moves. The selection page positions team composition and learning how fighters complement one another as central parts of the game.

Mewgenics supplies the tactical role-playing option. Its grid-based runs use randomized items, skills and attributes, while surviving cats can return with traits that pass to later generations. Xbox’s description also notes the game’s dark humor and high difficulty, which separates it sharply from the list’s two quieter releases.

Woodo and Lou’s Lagoon offer a slower finish

Woodo asks players to assemble wooden dioramas piece by piece. Rotating each scene reveals hidden objects, and completed placements add color, motion and detail. Its story follows a city girl named Foxy and her friendship with Ben, a frog she meets during a summer in the countryside.

Lou’s Lagoon combines crafting and exploration across islands recovering from tropical storms. Players gather resources, complete quests, improve tools and use a seaplane to move between archipelagos while looking for the missing Uncle Lou.

Together, the six choices show that October’s collection is not limited to Halloween horror. Xbox has paired its darker releases with competitive, tactical and low-pressure games, giving the store feature several distinct entry points instead of one seasonal theme.
