End of Abyss launches October 1 for Xbox Series X|S. The sci-fi action adventure follows Cel, a combat technician who descends with her crew into a damaged underground facility. Progress depends on surviving its creatures, improving Cel’s equipment and finding tools that open routes deeper into the complex.
Exploration changed the original design
Section 9 Interactive co-founder Marcus Ottvall says the project began as a faster top-down shooter. During development, the team shifted toward slower exploration, a more dynamic pace and sustained tension. The resulting structure combines metroidvania-style progression with action-horror encounters rather than treating each room as a self-contained firefight.
Early versions already contained basic movement, equipment, destructible enemies and small test levels. What they lacked was a defined visual identity. The studio responded by revising enemy and environment prototypes around an eerie, atmospheric direction. That process tied the mechanical route through the facility to a clearer sense of place.
A worn world built from practical references
The developers drew on films, games, comics and anime from the 1980s and 1990s. Ottvall points to the rough textures and handmade effects associated with that period as an influence on the facility. The goal was not strict realism. Section 9 balanced recognizable materials with exaggerated scale and shapes so the underground setting could feel weathered without looking ordinary.
Enemy production followed a similar practical sequence. The team first identified a gameplay function, then explored creature forms that made that behavior readable. Rough animation tests and Unreal Engine prototypes helped establish movement, attacks and destruction before the designs were finalized. Some enemies reinterpret familiar game archetypes, while others were developed around less conventional ideas.
What the launch announcement confirms
The official Xbox Wire post confirms the October 1 release date and Xbox Series X|S availability. It also identifies Section 9 Interactive as a studio founded by three former Tarsier Studios developers. Epic Games Publishing is handling the release.
The announcement does not frame End of Abyss as a conventional run-and-gun shooter. Its emphasis is the relationship between combat, equipment progression and a hostile space that must be investigated. Players considering the game should expect a top-down perspective, but the intended rhythm is deliberate exploration punctuated by threats rather than uninterrupted shooting.
