Overwatch Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, began on October 6 with a new support hero, an Escort map and two substantial changes to established characters. Blizzard’s own season briefing confirms the update rather than leaving the details to previews or leaks.
Doctrine is built around moving health between the two teams. His Eternal Scepter can heal allies or damage enemies at mid-to-long range, while mechanical drones provide healing and attack-speed support. Infuse strengthens his abilities. His ultimate grants Overhealth to allies while limiting the opposing team’s maximum health.
Grímsvötn expands the Escort map pool
The new Watchpoint: Grímsvötn map takes players into an Icelandic volcanic prison previously controlled by Overwatch and Helix. Blizzard describes it as the first new Escort map in years. Its story follows Doomfist’s return to the facility to free Doctrine, with Talon taking control before players push through the prison.
The setting matters beyond decoration: it closes the gap between Doctrine’s backstory and the current Reign of Talon arc. Blizzard calls Season 5 the final chapter of that storyline, although its announcement does not give a separate date for the narrative conclusion.
Sombra becomes a Support hero
Sombra moves out of the Damage role and becomes a Support Tactician. Hotfix targets an ally for healing and can be cast while she is invisible without immediately breaking stealth. Cyberspace creates an area that heals allies and applies Weaken to enemies, reducing their damage and healing effectiveness.
Roadhog also receives a redesigned kit. His Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger projectile at the center. Trash Compactor absorbs incoming enemy projectiles, then returns an explosive shot whose damage depends on how much it absorbed.
The Halloween mode rewards repeated deaths
Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games assigns a random hero at the start and adds random powers after each death. Event challenges award Offerings that players pledge to Ashe, Moira or Winston. The leading hero joins the mode next, and Blizzard says all three will be available by the final week as the roster expands to 20 heroes. The event runs from October 6 through November 2.
Season 5 also brings back revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15. Players can progress one Unvaulted Pass alongside the current pass, but the returning tracks exclude coins, XP boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles and Mythic skins.
