Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited, the fresh-start mode it announced at RuneFest 2026, less than two weeks after revealing it. Creative director Mod Ryan shared the decision on October 15 in an official video and a blog post titled “Reignited: An Update From Mod Ryan.”
Why Jagex reversed course
Ryan framed the cancellation as a direct answer to community reaction. “We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views,” he wrote. He pointed to the combat overhaul as the reason Jagex no longer ignores its players: the last time the studio set feedback aside, “combat changed forever,” and it took more than a decade to recover.
“It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” Ryan said. RuneScape should grow “with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community.”
What Reignited was supposed to be
Reignited was pitched at RuneFest as a separate fresh-start economy for new and returning players, letting everyone begin with a clean slate alongside one another. A vocal part of the player base argued the mode would fracture the community and pull focus from the live game, and Jagex has now sided with that view. RuneScape 4, a next-generation MMO built on Unreal Engine, was also announced at RuneFest, though no release date has been shared.
What replaces Reignited
Instead of a separate economy, Jagex is opening the existing game to newcomers with a 10-day membership trial that runs from December 2 through December 12. New characters, or any character without an active membership since June 2, can enter members’ worlds during that window. Old School RuneScape is not part of the trial. Ryan framed the change as “no split worlds, just you, me, and the many players coming in, playing the game we all love together.”
The December 2 update also ships the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey, alongside other improvements. The 2027 roadmap stays intact, with new combat and skilling content, a grandmaster quest that closes decade-old storylines, and an Agility rework, all continuing the Road to Restoration.
What happens immediately
Plugins still launch on Monday, October 19. Ryan closed by saying RuneScape’s future “is still extremely bright” and that the game “will always be built for and defined by its community.”
