Capcom announced on October 15 that it is bringing the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo to Nintendo Switch 2, letting players start the game’s opening for free and carry their progress into the full release. The studio’s official Monster Hunter site lists the Switch 2 demo for October 20, 2026 (October 19 in North America’s Pacific time zone), with the full game following on December 4.
The demo mirrors the opening of the full game, running from character creation through Chapter 1-3 “To the Forest.” Players can build a hunter and a Palico, and all 14 weapon types are available to try before committing to a loadout. The action is set in the Forbidden Lands, the uncharted territory that serves as the game’s setting. The demo is free to download, and the Switch 2 build carries the same opening content as the Prologue Demo already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
The Switch 2 demo is offline-only. Online multiplayer is not available, so firing an SOS Flare summons up to three NPC Support Hunters to assist instead of other players. Capcom directs players to the in-game Start Menu, Play Guide, and Weapon Controls sections for weapon specifics, and notes the full game opens online multiplayer for up to four hunters with cross-play across platforms.
Save data carries over to the full game. Hunters, Palicos, options, and story progress made in the prologue continue, so players can pick up where they left off. The transfer works even if the demo is left unfinished, and options or settings configured in the demo also carry over. Capcom’s instructions are to launch the full game on the same account and confirm the “Save data has been found for the Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo” prompt to resume from the title menu.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on Friday, December 4, 2026, joining the existing PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam versions. Capcom has also announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a “massive expansion” due in 2027, as the next chapter for the series.
