Modern Warfare 4 Won’t Hit Game Pass Until Holiday 2027, Activision Confirms

Activision has settled the biggest open question around Modern Warfare 4’s release: the next Call of Duty will not be part of Xbox Game Pass when it launches on October 23. A post from the Call of Duty Intel team confirms the game is a paid standalone release, and that subscribers who want to play on day one will need to buy it separately.

The announcement, published on the official Call of Duty Blog on October 15, pushes any Game Pass inclusion out to the Holiday 2027 window without naming an exact date. Until then, Game Pass Ultimate members keep access to the legacy Call of Duty titles already in the catalogue: Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III.

Xbox pre-order channels and bonuses

Xbox players can reserve Modern Warfare 4 through the Xbox Store on console, the Xbox app on PC, or the Microsoft Store. Digital pre-orders include Campaign Early Access starting October 16 and DMZ Early Access starting October 20, ahead of the October 23 launch, alongside the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack.

Pre-ordering any digital edition also grants the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint. On Xbox consoles, that blueprint receives an OG Green translucent treatment that the post says celebrates 25 years of Xbox.

What the announcement leaves open

The post is built around the Xbox experience and stops short of several details. Activision does not list a price or an edition breakdown, and it does not confirm the full platform set for this update. The early access dates also carry the usual caveats: the campaign and DMZ windows begin on different days, actual play time is subject to outages and time zone differences, and platform availability and start dates remain subject to change.

For Game Pass subscribers, the practical effect is straightforward. They can keep playing Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III through their subscription, but Modern Warfare 4 itself will remain outside the catalogue until the Holiday 2027 window. Anyone planning to jump in on October 23 should treat it as a separate purchase rather than a subscription benefit.
