4A Games is preparing a free next-generation update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux, timed ahead of the studio’s next release. The two entries first appeared in the early 2010s and were later collected into the Redux bundle. The announcement frames the update as a thank-you to players after the franchise passed 50 million sales, and it is being positioned as an enhancement rather than a full remaster.
What changes on consoles
The update adds native PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S support. Console players can run the two games at 4K and 60 fps, or upscaled 4K at 120 fps on a compatible display. PlayStation 5 Pro receives PSSR, while Xbox Series X uses TSR upscaling, with spatial audio listed for Xbox platforms. 4A Games also points to improved lighting, shadows and particle effects, plus DualSense adaptive triggers and Xbox impulse triggers.
PC receives DLSS and bug fixes
On PC the headline addition is DLSS, alongside spatial audio and quality-of-life fixes drawn from community feedback. The studio says the original Redux look is being preserved rather than rebuilt, with 4K textures and improved animation, audio and environment detail applied across every platform. Some console features, such as runtime tessellation and power-optimized modes, are specific to that hardware.
Timing and what is still unknown
The update lands on PC on October 22, 2026, and on consoles on October 29, free for existing owners on Steam, the Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Japanese console players receive it in November. Full patch notes have not been published yet and will arrive at launch, so the complete list of fixes and platform features is still pending.
Metro 2039 is scheduled for February 4, 2027, giving the studio a window to bring the older games onto current hardware before the sequel arrives.
