Marathon’s Symbiosis Update Adds Permanent PvE and Team Deathmatch

A Runner explores Tau Ceti IV in Bungie gameplay from Marathon.

Bungie is widening Marathon beyond its original extraction-shooter structure. The December Symbiosis update will introduce the game’s first permanent player-versus-environment mode, an experimental team deathmatch option and a broader version of the Perimeter zone.

The studio’s plan follows feedback from players who found Marathon difficult to understand or wanted clearer reasons to return. Bungie says it still intends to preserve high-stakes PvEvP, but it is building a connected set of modes with different levels of pressure, time commitment and competition.

Symbiosis creates a lower-pressure route into Marathon

The permanent PvE mode is meant to let players explore, test equipment and tackle combat without the threat of rival Runners. Bungie has not presented it as a finished replacement for extraction play; some details remain in development and are due to be explained before the update arrives.

Team deathmatch has a different purpose. Bungie describes it as an experiment that lets players practice direct combat without risking an entire run. The studio plans to watch how the mode is used before deciding how it should influence Marathon’s competitive options.

Perimeter is also getting a visual and structural overhaul. A fungal ecosystem will change familiar routes, while new points of interest and summit challenges are intended to bring the zone closer to the depth of Outpost and Night Marsh. One of those encounters features the Tick Queen, which Bungie calls its largest combatant so far.

Onboarding and progression are part of the same repair

Symbiosis will add Bishop, a fast melee-focused shell, alongside a social space with a firing range. Bungie also says the onboarding flow will be revised because the current game asks new players to absorb too much too quickly.

The December release is one stage in a longer schedule. An October Nightfall refresh targets progression, rewards and the current live experience. A larger March update is planned to connect permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP activities, deepen shell progression, refactor the Cradle, add story material, introduce new enemies and open another zone.

That roadmap is a plan rather than a guarantee about final scope. Bungie says parts of Symbiosis are still being completed, and team deathmatch is explicitly experimental. What is firm in the announcement is the direction: the studio is keeping extraction at the center while adding safer places to learn, practice and play.
