Bungie Maps Out Marathon’s October, December and March Overhaul

Bungie has laid out a three-stage plan to broaden Marathon beyond its original extraction-focused structure. The schedule starts with a smaller live-game refresh in October, moves to the larger Symbiosis update in December, and culminates in a more substantial overhaul planned for March.

October resets progression before the larger additions

The Nightfall Refresh is intended to provide a cleaner starting point while Bungie continues work on the later updates. The studio says the October 6 release will reset progression and the in-game economy, introduce a new rewards pass, and include quality-of-life, tuning and balance changes. Vault Breaker is also due to return for a limited period so the team can gather more information about how PvE fits into progression.

This first step is narrower than the updates that follow. Bungie has also moved away from a rigid seasonal timetable, saying the new approach should give the development team more flexibility to build and test major features before release.

Symbiosis adds permanent PvE and experimental Team Deathmatch

Symbiosis is scheduled for December 8. Its central addition is Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, giving players a lower-pressure option that does not involve being hunted by rival Runners. It will sit alongside the existing PvEvP format rather than replace it.

The December update is also set to add an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, an expanded and visually reworked Perimeter, a social space with a firing range, improved onboarding and a new Runner shell called Bishop. Bungie describes Bishop as a fast melee-focused option. The refreshed Perimeter is planned to include new routes, points of interest and a large enemy encounter called the Tick Queen.

March is meant to connect the new modes

Bungie’s March plan is broader. The studio says it is working toward connected PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences, deeper shell progression, a revised Cradle, more focused narrative content, new enemies and another zone. Those elements remain plans rather than finished features, and Bungie says it will provide more detail as development continues.

The roadmap therefore does more than add isolated modes. Its stated aim is to create several entry points for different levels of commitment while preserving high-risk extraction play. Whether that structure improves retention cannot be known from the announcement alone, but the sequence gives players clear checkpoints for judging the work: the October reset, the December mode expansion and the larger March integration.
