Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis launches February 12, 2027, and its developers have laid out how they rebuilt Lara Croft for a new generation while keeping the character instantly recognizable. Pre-orders are live now on PlayStation Store.
In a PlayStation Blog feature credited to Amazon Game Studios’ Global Head of Content and Community Michael Lovan, Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog describe the original 1996 model as the anchor every visual decision still answers to.
The polygon problem
Brendon Bengston at Crystal Dynamics frames the change in terms of compute. The original Lara was a few hundred polygons shaped by hardware limits; today the team asks how to make the most realistic version of that same design. The answer is a stack of rendering techniques that simply did not exist in 1996.
Hair cards replace solid polygon shapes with thin, overlapping strips of semi-transparent texture, so Lara’s hair moves in separate clumps and catches light. Subsurface scattering lets light enter the skin, scatter beneath it, and glow back out, giving her face the look of living tissue in close camera work. Flow maps add surface response, and custom blend shapes let one face form thousands of expressions by moving between sculpted poses. The team credits Epic’s Unreal technology for carrying those details into how Lara moves and emotes.
Clothing gets the same treatment. The team sculpted a base body, 3D-printed it at real scale, dressed a mannequin, and scanned it, hiring a tailor to make an actual outfit so denim and silk fold the way real fabric does.
Each console generation has layered a new interpretation onto that core. The PlayStation 2 era of Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld gave Lara smoother geometry and more expressive animation, and the Survivor trilogy pushed detail and realism further. Senior character concept artist Aleksandra Skiba frames the harder challenge as balance: pushing fidelity forward while keeping Lara recognizable.
What was kept, what changed
Narrative Director John Stafford splits the work into three parts. The team kept Lara’s intelligence, fearlessness, and thrill-seeking spirit; deepened her emotional depth and relationships without losing her confidence; and unified the mythic, grounded, and larger-than-life tones of past eras into one character.
The feature frames the game around PlayStation 5, and the official Tomb Raider site also lists Xbox Series X|S and Steam, with the February 12, 2027 release date on both. For Stafford, one trait is non-negotiable: Lara’s curiosity, the need to know what is behind the next door.
