Stellaris 4.5 Cygnus is available as a free Custodian update, but an active campaign needs more thought than the usual patch-day click. Paradox says the Pop Group rework changes how population data is stored, so campaigns from version 4.4 and earlier will not load correctly in 4.5. Players who care about an unfinished run should back it up or remain on the 4.4 rollback branch through Steam.
Why this patch breaks compatibility
Cygnus stops splitting Pop Groups into separate entries for every combination of faction and ethic. Each group now records the percentage of Pops associated with each ethic and faction. That should reduce late-game clutter and give the simulation fewer groups to manage, but the underlying data change prevents a clean transition from older saves.
The faction interface also shows attraction more clearly, while suppressing or embracing a faction now feeds into its growth rate more visibly. These are system-level changes rather than a short list of number tweaks, which explains the compatibility warning.
What else arrives in 4.5
The release contains more than 350 fixes across stability, desynchronization, artificial intelligence and community-reported problems. The source report says the published change list runs to 525 lines and that 46.7 percent trace back to issues raised through reports, forums, Reddit and Discord during an open beta that received nine updates.
Players also gain policies for guiding ship autodesign priorities, revised starbase defense modules and new federation economic laws. Nomad AI received economic and system-selection work. Owners of the relevant expansions can use additional Nomads content tied to The Machine Age, Toxoids Species Pack and Cosmic Storms.
Apple Silicon and visual customization
The macOS build now ships as a universal arm64 and x86_64 binary. It can run natively on Apple Silicon instead of relying on Rosetta 2. Empire appearance options also separate map border, map fill and ship colors from the primary and secondary empire palette.
For a new campaign, 4.5 is the straightforward starting point. For an established 4.4 save, finish the run on rollback or preserve a backup before experimenting. The update’s largest benefit comes from its rewritten population model, and that same rewrite is the reason old campaigns need protection.
