Juan Vaca, a story director at Gears of War developer The Coalition, says he was included in Microsoft’s latest layoffs. He announced the news in a LinkedIn post and said he was looking for directing and storytelling work in games, film or television.

IGN reports that Vaca had worked at the company for four years and that the layoff came shortly before Gears of War: E-Day’s early-access release. The timing places the job cut after the main production milestone commonly described as going gold, but it does not establish what post-launch duties Vaca would have held.

What is confirmed

Vaca’s own statement confirms his inclusion in the Microsoft layoffs. It does not describe the decision process, severance terms, the number of positions removed from The Coalition or any change to E-Day’s release plan.

IGN connects the departure to a wider Xbox restructuring that eliminated 268 roles across several teams and central functions. That company-wide number should not be read as The Coalition’s studio total.

What remains unknown

Microsoft has not outlined a new long-term structure for The Coalition in the reporting attached to Vaca’s departure. There is also no announced cancellation or delay for E-Day. A senior creative departure can affect continuity after release, but available evidence does not show which narrative, update or future-project responsibilities will move to other staff.

The distinction between completed launch work and future studio planning matters here. A game can remain on schedule after a late production layoff because builds, certification and distribution have already advanced. That does not reduce the impact on the person losing a job or on teammates who inherit remaining work.

Release proximity raises staffing questions

IGN characterized the layoff as arriving about a week before early access and five days before the wider launch. Vaca had publicly celebrated the game going gold shortly beforehand, according to the outlet.

Until Microsoft or The Coalition gives a staffing update, the defensible account is limited: Vaca confirmed his layoff, IGN identified his E-Day story-director role, and the game remained scheduled in the report. Claims about the franchise’s future or the studio’s next project would be speculation.
