Sony Interactive Entertainment is adding Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, to the standard PlayStation 5. The new AI-based upscaling option will first appear in patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
QSSR is a lighter version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the image reconstruction system introduced with PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR’s computing requirements had kept it off the base console. The company developed QSSR through Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD, using a smaller neural network and an implementation tuned for PS5 hardware.
What players can expect
Upscaling renders a game at one resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image for display. According to Sony, QSSR is designed to improve fine detail and keep reconstructed images more stable from frame to frame. PSSR remains the higher-end option on PS5 Pro, so Sony is not presenting QSSR as feature parity between the two consoles.
Insomniac Games says the option improves pixel-level clarity and stability in the busy environments of Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions describes similar gains in character and environmental detail for Ghost of Yōtei. Those assessments come from the developers working with the technology; Sony’s announcement does not include independent image comparisons or performance measurements.
Support starts with two games
Both launch titles are receiving QSSR as an additional graphics option rather than a replacement for their existing modes. Sony has not published a complete compatibility list, minimum output resolution or frame-rate target. The practical result will therefore depend on each developer’s implementation.
Sony plans to offer the library to all PlayStation developers. Wider adoption is not automatic: studios will still need to integrate and test it, and no schedule has been announced for games beyond the first two. For standard PS5 owners, the initial patches will provide the first direct look at how closely the lighter system approaches the reconstruction quality associated with PS5 Pro.
