Obsidian Entertainment now reports to Bethesda as part of Xbox’s studio reorganization, but the move does not merge the developer into Bethesda Game Studios. A staff memo obtained by IGN says Feargus Urquhart and Obsidian’s leadership team will continue to run the studio.

According to IGN, Bethesda head Jill Braff described the move as primarily a change in reporting structure. She said Obsidian’s identity would remain distinct, current teams were not being asked to reset their roadmaps, and Bethesda Game Studios would continue to lead the Fallout franchise.

How responsibility is divided

The reported structure puts studio management and franchise ownership on separate lines. Obsidian retains its leadership while reporting to Braff. Bethesda Game Studios keeps the lead role on Fallout, and both developers are already working together on a new project in the series.

That arrangement answers one immediate concern raised by the reorganization: Obsidian is not being described as a support team stripped of its existing identity. It does not answer how staffing, budgets, approvals or project scope may change over time. No release window has been announced for the collaborative Fallout project.

What the memo commits to

IGN reports that Braff told staff the organization was not resetting its roadmap or redirecting teams from their current work. The memo also kept accountability explicit, with Bethesda Game Studios leading Fallout and Obsidian’s own leadership retaining control of its studio.

Those statements are internal commitments reported from a memo, not a public production schedule. They establish the intended chain of command as of September 23, but they do not identify a title, platforms, launch year or the exact division of development work on the new Fallout project.

Players can read the change as an administrative consolidation around a franchise already connecting the two studios. The safest conclusion is narrow: Obsidian reports into Bethesda, remains separately led, and continues its existing roadmap while collaborating on Fallout. Any claim that the studio has become a dedicated Fallout house would go beyond the reported memo.
