Lichthund plans to release Rockbeasts for PlayStation 5 in January 2027. The studio announced the window alongside a new partnership with Critical Role, which is supporting the game on both the creative and publishing sides.
The game puts players in charge of a struggling rock band rather than onstage as one of its performers. As manager, the player has to balance resources, personalities and the practical problems that follow a group from its garage beginnings toward larger venues.
Critical Role is joining the project in two ways
Lichthund’s announcement describes Critical Role as a creative collaborator and publishing partner. It does not break down the companies’ respective production duties, so the stated arrangement should not be read as a full transfer of development. Lichthund remains the studio presenting the game and its design.
Two Critical Role performers are also joining the voice cast. Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel will voice characters in Rockbeasts, although the announcement does not identify their roles. Their casting is separate from Critical Role’s business involvement with the release.
The January window is specific to PS5
The PlayStation announcement confirms a January 2027 PS5 launch and links to the console store page, where the game can be wishlisted. It does not provide an exact day, price or edition details. Those points remain unannounced and should be checked closer to release rather than inferred from the month-long window.
Rockbeasts is structured around management decisions and character conflicts. Lichthund says players will deal with unfinished songs, competing egos and emergencies while trying to keep the band together. The premise makes the Critical Role casting relevant to the game’s character-driven side, while the publishing partnership gives the small studio additional support for bringing that concept to market.
Several details remain open. Lichthund has not named the characters voiced by Mercer and Riegel, and the official post does not assign specific production tasks to Critical Role. For now, the confirmed scope is limited to a January 2027 PS5 window, a creative and publishing partnership, and the two announced cast members.
