Prime Video is turning Fallout into a reality competition. On Fallout Day, October 23, the streamer announced Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, a ten-episode unscripted series that seals everyday contestants inside Vault-Tec-style bomb shelters and asks them to prove their “aptitude for the apocalypse” for a shot at $1,000,000. The season premieres Wednesday, January 13, 2027, exclusively on Prime Video.
The first four episodes drop together on premiere day, followed by three more each week through January 27, a rollout that keeps the show on air through the end of the month. Amazon says the series will stream in more than 240 countries and territories.
The format borrows Fallout Shelter’s vocabulary rather than the role-playing games’ stories. Contestants become “dwellers,” their arena is a state-of-the-art bomb-proof vault shelter, and one “special dweller” walks away with the money. The announcement names three challenge categories – high-octane drills, psychological dilemmas, and morally challenging behavior trials – which map to physical, mental, and ethical endurance in that order.
The production pedigree is substantial. Studio Lambert, the London and Los Angeles company behind The Traitors and Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, produces the series in co-production with Kilter Films and in association with Bethesda Game Studios. Kilter Films, run by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, developed the Emmy-nominated Fallout drama that Prime Video says passed 100 million viewers across its first two seasons by March 2026.
Bethesda’s attachment carries weight. Todd Howard and James Altman are credited as executive producers, and the studio’s Fallout Shelter mobile game – the series’ namesake – has passed 230 million downloads, according to Amazon’s press materials.
The timing is deliberate. The scripted Fallout drama’s second season ran from December 2025, its third is in production, and January 2027 would otherwise be a quiet stretch for the franchise on Prime Video. A three-week competition rollout fills that gap and keeps the brand in front of viewers between drama seasons.
Several questions remain open. No host has been named, no contestants have been cast, and episode length has not been disclosed. Amazon has also not described how weekly eliminations will be staged or whether any prize money exists beyond the winner’s $1 million.
