Green rain happens once each summer in Stardew Valley. The television forecast turns anomalous the day before, giving you time to empty your backpack and collect a scythe, axe and food. The event can fall on Summer 5, 6, 7, 14, 15, 16, 18 or 23.
Your best route depends on what the farm needs. Moss supports several useful recipes, Fiddlehead Ferns can fill the original Chef’s Bundle, and Mossy Seeds let you grow special trees after the weather ends. Pick one target before leaving the farm rather than trying to strip every temporary plant from the map.
Prepare the night before
- Leave unused tools and gifts at home.
- Take a scythe for moss and weeds.
- Take an axe if you need Fiddlehead Ferns from Type 3 trees.
- Reserve open inventory slots for moss, fiber, seeds and ferns.
- Put food on the hotbar if you plan to chop several trees.
First-year villagers mostly remain indoors during the event, and gift giving is unavailable. Use the day for gathering and event dialogue instead of carrying a normal gift route.
Collect moss without clearing the farm
Strike visible moss with a tool or weapon. You do not need to cut down the tree. A scythe handles moss and nearby vegetation without spending much energy. On tapped trees, use a scythe or sword so an axe does not remove the tapper.
Large event weeds can drop moss, fiber and Mossy Seeds. They disappear the following day, so temporary weeds are a better first target than permanent trees you want to keep. A small reserve of ten moss covers the moss portion of one Mushroom Log. Thirty moss covers three logs or one Deluxe Worm Bin, depending on the other materials and recipe unlocks.
Find the fern-shaped tree
The tall curled Type 3 green-rain tree produces Fiddlehead Ferns. A fully grown tree yields five when chopped and its stump yields one more. If you preserve a Type 3 tree, it can be tapped for one fern every two days outside winter.
Save one fern if your Community Center uses the original Chef’s Bundle. Remixed bundles differ, so check the bundle in your own save before reserving an item.
Keep Mossy Seeds for later
Mossy Seeds can grow any of the three green-rain tree varieties. A seed is not a guaranteed fern tree, but planting several gives you a renewable area that is easier to manage than relying on temporary transformations around Pelican Town.
Many transformed trees revert after the event, some special trees remain, and those in Pelican Town are removed. Plant saved seeds where permanent trees will not block paths, crops or planned buildings.
Choose a recipe target
A Mushroom Log unlocks at Foraging level 4 and costs ten hardwood plus ten moss. Deluxe Bait also unlocks at Fishing level 4 and uses five ordinary bait plus two moss to produce five pieces. At Fishing level 8, a Deluxe Worm Bin costs one regular Worm Bin and 30 moss, then produces four or five Deluxe Bait per day.
Recipe unlocks and supporting materials determine which target is useful. Store the moss if you lack the required level, hardwood or Worm Bin. Green rain is a collection window, not a deadline to spend everything before the day ends.
If you miss the event
A missed day does not lock the farm out of the core resources. Moss can appear on trees outside green rain. Fiddlehead Ferns can be foraged in the Secret Woods during summer and in Ginger Island’s jungle throughout the year. A Rain Totem creates ordinary rain under its normal conditions; it cannot call the annual green-rain event.
Start with the resource tied to a bundle or unlocked recipe, then use remaining time for seeds and spare moss. That order gives the day a concrete payoff even if the valley is too large to clear.
